About Donny Joe

Life is my passion. I have traveled the world and seen magnificent sites. I like savory foods, hot summers, and beaches/lakes. Someday I'll learn how to bend a fork using PK. I have 2 international sponsors who support my habit of throwing sharp pointed objects at small targets and my ultimate goal is to win world championships and become #1 in the world. Along the way, I will gravitate towards positive, happy people who think of life as...living the dream.

Guess Who’s Coming to The World – Stage 3

The WorldI’m looking forward to returning back to Hong Kong for The World – Stage 3 on May 27, 2012.  In addition to more great darts, tasty food, and people watching, it now seems that The World Stage 3 will be uniquely different from all previous events.

Recently, there have been rumors about a certain famous professional player talking about wanting to travel to Hong Kong for The World event.  This was mentioned in various darting forums and sites across the internet.  Well, wait no more because it seems that it is now official….   Continue reading

Hong Kong – One Visit is Not Enough

Hong Kong is cool place.  I like traveling to foreign countries and exploring places that I’ve never been to. I get to see and experience all kinds of things that are interesting and memorable. It’s even more interesting when you don’t speak the local language…or in my case, not very well. I stayed in the Tsim Sha Tsui district of Kowloon, Hong Kong. This area was densely packed with all types of shops, restaurants, jewelry stores, night clubs, electronics stores, and bars. When the sun went down, the place lit up and the area was vibrant and alive. Continue reading

The World Stage 2 – My Experience

The World Soft Darts ChampionshipFor several weeks, I was eagerly anticipating my first trip to Hong Kong.  I had been extremely busy at work since the beginning of the year and I needed a break.  And of course as soon as I leave, a major issue emerged in my project back at work.  But I have a strong project team and they diffused the issue during my absence.

I left Houston around 9am on Thursday and flew to San Francisco. After a very short layover, I depart from San Francisco for a long 14+ hour flight to Hong Kong. Continue reading

Here I Come – The World Stage 2

I’m heading to Hong Kong for The World Stage 2 in April 2012.  Woohoo!  I’ve been to many tournaments in my 20+ years of playing, but I have never been to a tournament where I’ve had this much anticipation and excitement.   Not only am I excited about the opportunity to play in The World event, but it will be my first time in Asia.  I just wish my Cantonese was stronger.

When I land and meet the locals for the first time, they will look at me and say, “Ne hou ma?”  And I will say with my Texas accent, “I’m doing great, how are you?”  I bet that will throw them for a loop.

Things I look forward to…..touring around Hong Kong, eating wonderful and tasty food, not being the shortest person in the room, high level darts, and representing my sponsors on the world stage.

Look for me to post my excellent adventures when I return.

What Brings You Here?

I saw this picture on a t-shirt when I was walking through the airport in Memphis, Tennessee.  I stopped and stared.  I marveled at the youthful looking faces and the immense talent of these two legends.  Can you see the humbleness and deep pride in Johnny Cash’s eyes?  Can you imagine looking up the word ‘swagger’, and finding this picture of Elvis Presley?  I love this picture.  You may wonder what these two studs have to do with darts.  Quite frankly, they have nothing to do with darts but their music represents an era that is a part of my life and this blog is about my excellent adventure in darts and life.  Someday, I promise to write more about myself and my life away from darts.  But right now, I want to learn more about you.  Who are you and what brings you here? There’s an Elephant in the Room

The idea of separating the North American professional darts game from the non-professional game is not as easy as it seems. I could present many positive examples for why the creation of a separate professional game is a solid idea, but I am certain that this idea will not succeed in the near future for one specific reason. There’s a giant elephant in the room that nobody talks about.

The Professional Game

I’ve been reading a number of different threads from Facebook related to the state of steel tip darts in America.  No, I don’t have a Facebook account, but I have friends who copy and send me threads on topics that may interest me.   Many of the threads that I’ve read lately contain passionate, and sometimes heated, conversations regarding what needs to change, the reasons for change, the people who would benefit from the change, how to instigate change, how to implement the change, etc.   While the opinions and reasons vary, most people are ready for a change.  In my opinion, there are two key changes that need to occur first.  Once these changes are made, the direction of future changes becomes clearer and easier. 2012 – New Year and New Opportunities

The game of darts in North America in 2012 promises to be quite different from years past.  For starters, the American Darts Organization has a new President, the PDC North American Pro Tour is kicking off, Major League Darts has scheduled a National Championship, and DARTSLIVE is expanding throughout North America.  There hasn’t been this much excitement and activity since the Lucky Strike tournament series back in the early 90′s. L-Style Fan Giveaway

I switched to using L-Style flights, shafts, and tips earlier this year (2011).  After the switch, I began racking up numerous tournament wins and high finishes in both steel tip and soft tip events.  Highlights of my year includes finishing 3rd place in the soft tip Pro AA singles division at the Bullshooter World Championship and finishing #11 in the national rankings of the American Darts Organization.  Without a doubt,  L-Style’s excellent products played a major role in my consistent finishes and overall success in 2011.

L-Style is currently hosting an L-Style Fan Giveaway event on Facebook where lucky winners will win eight sets of L-Style flights ($80 value).  To enter, all you have to do is goto the L-Style event Facebook page and ’Join’ (i.e. attend) the event and then click the ‘Like’ button.

You can also increase your chances of winning by posting a picture of your favorite L-Style products on the event page wall and then tag the L-Style Facebook page which is…. @L-Style.
